Megalithic structure

The National Monuments Service's description

The ‘site of’ the megalithic structure is located close to a field boundary 130m SE of Lough Gur in an area covered by trees. Located 60m SE of the Lough Gur Wedge Tomb (LI030-029----); 270m NNE of the fort known as Carriganaffrin (LI032-028----) and 125m W of a standing stone (LI032-032----). A large boulder annotated 'Carriganeithig' lies 100m to NE.
The site is not depicted on any ed. OSi historic maps. It is not visible on the OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 or on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. The site was first referenced in the early 19th century (Croker 1833, 109). Dowd (1896, 78) stated that, ‘A second giant's grave (LI032-030----) was to be found two hundred yards west of this (LI032-029----), but it is now barely distinguishable’. Begley (1906, 21) described a destroyed monument close to the Lough Gur Wedge Tomb ‘near the south end of the Causeway, leading to the Black Castle, at Lough Gur, there is a fine specimen (LI032-029----) still in good preservation, and near it another (LI032-030----) is barely visible’. More recently O'Kelly (1944, 24) recorded that he was ‘very doubtful’ about the site and it is not included in the Megalithic Survey for Co. Limerick either as a known or potential monument (De Valera and Ó Nualláin, 1982, 71-9). The supposed location of the monument is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 16/03/2016 and 28/06/2018. Dowd’s description of the monument suggested that the site could be located c. 200m W of the Lough Gur Wedge Tomb (LI032-029----).
