The precise location of Tooreen Castle has not been identified. Westropp (1906-7, 167) recorded the following details about Tooreen Castle; '1641 Edm. Hickie, of Tourine, and W. Leo, of Tullyvin, hanged some of the inmates of Croom C[astle]. (Dep., 383). 1655 Tworin, in Croom, stump of a C[astle]. Edm. Hickie (C.S., xxiv., p. 30). There was some tradition of a C[astle]. there down to 1874.
The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that Edmund Hickie of Tooreen, an Irish Papist, was the owner of 'six greate accres with two houses, the stump of a castle one Eele weare [LI030-188----] out of repaire, and an orchard' (Simington 1938, 140).
