The National Monuments Service's description
Though listed as a castle by Westropp (1906-7, 246, no 396) he also suggest that the existence of a castle in this townland is 'unknown' (ibid.). According to Westropp this possible castle of Ballyegan (Baile Éignigh/Ballyegny) in the Parish of Rathronan was; 'Unknown. Given as in this parish with last in O.S.L. (9, p. 74), and separately from Ballyegny (Ib., p. 166). It closely resembled Ballyvoghan in size and remains'. Could be a duplicate site with Ballyegny Castle (LI028-020----).
