The National Monuments Service's description

Church of Ireland church built on site of medieval church of Kilscannell. Described in 1840 as the 'site of the ancient church is now occupied by a small modern Protestant one, and there is nothing of interest to the antiquarian in the church yard' (OSL,. 48).
Westropp (1904-5, 400) recorded the following details on Kilscannell; ‘Killscanneil, 1201. Quit
claim to Kilscanylle by Ade Palmifer, 1280 (B.B.L., lxix.). Nicholas O'Cathbuoyg, the unlawful occupant, ordered to assign the perpetual vicarage of Kylscanyll to Gilla-Seanayn Ohalphy, dispensed, though the son of a priest. It was void, because Ric. Burchs held it a year, without ordination, 1396 ("Cal. Papal Letters," iv., p. 530). Kilscanyll, 1302; Kystannyl, 1418; Kiskannell, ruinous, 1615 b. Site - The ruined I.C. church was built on the old site, 1822'.
19th century Church of Ireland church ruins described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as a 'Freestanding Board of First Fruits Church of Ireland church, built in 1822, comprising three-stage square-profile tower, flanked to north and south by single-storey single-bay porches, adjoining west elevation of gabled three-bay double-height nave' (www.buildingsofireland.ie; Reg.
