A flood relief scheme for the Mulkear River was undertaken by the Office of Public Works. The work involved widening the river and excavating new diversion channels. All groundworks were monitored. During the course of excavating a new diversion channel north of Cappamore, a fulacht fiadh was recorded. The southern section of the fulacht fiadh was excavated. The remainder of the mound, c. 14m by 21m, was visible as a low grass-covered mound to the north of the wayleave and was not excavated.
Excavation of the burnt mound spreads in the area of the channel revealed a large trough, roughly circular in plan. It measured 2.08m by 4.41m by 1.32m deep. It contained ten fills and was cut below the water-table. Timbers were found in the basal fill in association with hazelnuts, hazelnut shells, charcoal and animal bone. The mound was composed of nine burnt spreads. It measured 4m by 19m. The spreads were sandy clays with 50–70% of each being composed of burnt sandstone fragments.
