The National Monuments Service's description

The precise location of a medieval fish weir in the Mulkear River to the S of Owney Abbey (LI014-014002-) has not been identified. This monument was one of two fish weirs (LI014-014014-/015-) mentioned in the 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick which recorded that in the parish of Abbeyowney there was ‘a Mannor Towne (LI014-014001-) wth the priviledge of a Courte Leete and Courte barron. Ye River of Muilcherne leadinge through the said Towne and a stone bridge (LI014-014008-) thereuppon one Mill (LI014-014007-) two fishing weares’ (Simington 1938, 3). The fish weir depicted on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map may have been built on the site of or incorporated remains of the medieval fish weir. The second weir (LI014-014015-) may have been located approx. 120m to the E. The two fishing weirs may be indicated by the two islands depicted on the 1900 ed. OS 25-inch map.
