Ringfort - unclassified

The National Monuments Service's description

Immediately N of R12 roadway and 20m S of the townland boundary with Ballybrennan. A concrete yard and modern buildings now stand on the site of the monument. Annotated 'Lissaniska' on the 1840 OS 6-inch map where it is depicted as a sub-circular shaped area enclosed by a bank, the SW extent of which has been intersected by the public road. The 1897 edition of the OS 25-inch map depicts a raised circular-shaped area (approx. int. diam. 35m, approx. ext. diam. 43m) defined by a scarp. Outline of enclosing element of ringfort with building standing in the centre of the monument visible on 2005 OSi orthophoto. SE section of curving bank of ringfort visible on Google Earth orthophoto taken 26/05/2004. Large concrete yard and modern buildings stand today on the footprint of the monument as shown on Google Earth orthoimage taken 2019. Lissaniska (Lios an Uisce / Fort of Water) was described in the Ordnance Survey Name Books for Cahernarry parish as following; 'This fort is about 2 chains [40m] in diameter, circular, and composed of earth, with a green flat surface. It is about 3 feet [0.9m] high. It is situated in a low plain and is no, therefore, in view of any other forts' (OSNB Cahernarry Parish, 332).
