Westropp records the following details about Cloonanna Church; 'An ancient parish in Pubblebrian, now merged. Clonany, 1291. John Purcel claimed dower on Clonany Hyrtherag, 1318 (Plea R. 123 of xi Ed. II, m. 4) ; Cluainanny, 1418; Clunany, in Croom, 1615 A.; Cluonnanna, a parish, 1655 (D.S. (B.), 27; Civil Survey, p. 34); Clounana Temple granted to W. Barker, 1667 (Act. Sett.). Fabric - The west end, and much of the sides, remained in 1875. I am told that much has been since levelled' (Westropp 1904-5, 385).
Begley (1906, 268) recorded that 'The church of Cloonanna, a rectory belonging to the
rectory of Croom, and hath a vicar. The ruins of this old church stand on a rising ground commanding a pleasant prospect on the east bank of the Maigue, and to the north of Adare parish. A few fragments of the old church still remain'.
Poorly preserved remains of medieval church of which the W gable of the church remains upstanding with the lower courses of the W end of the S wall (L 4.1m; H 2.35m; T 0.74m) surviving and a short return of the NW angle which has been modified by a modern burial plot. Most of the N wall has been levelled with a short section of the E wall surviving above ground.
