Boundary stone

The National Monuments Service's description

On the road verge S of the R503 at the intersection of the R503 and a local public road and 450m E of the M7. Annotated 'Liberty Stone' on the 1840 OS 6-inch map where it is depicted standing on the line of the ‘Parliamentary Boundary’ of Limerick City. This stone marked the boundary between the jurisdiction of the Mayor of Limerick City and the rest of the county which was outside his governance. The stone is not indicated at this location on the 1897 OS 25-inch map. The stone is not visible on Google Earth imagery taken 28/06/2018.
The Ordnance Survey Letters for the Parish of Stradbally recorded the following details about this inscribed stone; 'Situated in the south corner of Ballynagowan Td., in the front wall of Terence Gleeson's house, near the road side leading from Limerick to Nenagh. This stone is about 3 ft. [0.9m] high and 1½ ft [0.45m] high. It was placed here in 1786 by Sir Christopher Knight, the then Mayor of Limerick' (OSL).
