The National Monuments Service's description
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007
Discovered in 1911 when ten stone-lined graves were uncovered while foundations were being dug for an electrical power station in Chapel Lane, Dundalk (CLAJ 1911, 441). In 1948 during alterations and extensions to the buildings five similar graves were found (CLAJ 1948, 315). The burials were orientated E-W and appeared to be all slab-lined with a slab covering over the head portion (CLAJ 1911, 441). The graves included that of at least one child. In 1952 further evidence of the cemetery came to light when a trench was cut across the footpath on the S side of the county library, but no description of the findings is given. (CLAJ 1952, 286)
