The National Monuments Service's description
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007
Situated in a prominent position NE of the Kilcurry River, on the lower undulating slopes of the Armagh hills. The location is still known locally as 'Ard na gCloch Mór', 'The height of the great stones' (CLAJ 1910, 294). Wright (1758, 8-9, Pl. 2, Site F) describes a circular feature containing stone cists, 'placed in a triangular form' and containing 'two or three different urns', one of which was filled with bone and charcoal. Sites E and F described by Wright were surrounded by a circle of stones. There are now no visible surface traces of this site, though several large stones in nearby field fences may be the remains of site clearance.
