The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Oval outcropping mound, with slight remains of wall at NW end. It is recorded by Wright (1758, 15-16, Plates 9 and 10) as being of oblong construction in the shape of a ship. Thus the site has been given the popular ascription of 'the Ship's Temple'. The site, which is also known as 'The Stump', has also given its name, in Gaelicised form, to the townland. The site would appear to have been a medieval tower (LH003-044002-), but was largely destroyed in the early twentieth century. (Taylor and Skinner's map, 1777; Bassett 1886, 291; CLAJ 1915, 339)
