The National Monuments Service's description
In 1620 a land grant to James Mc William Ferrall included the ‘castle [LF027-003004-], town [LF027-003006-] and lands of Ballymahan, with the water-mill' (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 466). A mill is also mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654-5) (Simington 1961, vol. 10, 48). Its precise location has not been identified. In 1999 testing was undertaken at a proposed development site on the N bank of the Inny River adjacent to a church and graveyard (LF027-003001-, LF027-003002-) (Byrne 2000, 181). No features, structures or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered although the backfilled remains of a millrace, associated with an extant mill named ‘Corn Mill (Disused)’ on the OS 25-inch plan (surveyed 1911), were identified.
