The National Monuments Service's description

Within the bawn (LF008-012003-) associated with the castle (LF008-012001-). The 1641 depositions record that during an attack by Irish rebels, 'the Rebells surprised and tooke from the Castle the well and all the water belonging to it' (TCD, MS 817, fol. 178r). Following this the people inside the castle dug 'a hole 40 foote [c. 12m] deepe in the bawne of the Castle & recouered water which refreshed them much' (ibid., fol. 178v). This well may be that indicated on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map.
