Burnt pit

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated on a fairly level landscape. First identified in centre-line testing (05E0983) for a new line of the N4 (O’Connor et al. 2005, 36), and later fully resolved (E003304) as Moher 4. A small pit (diam. 0.55-0.6m; D 0.15m) filled with a grey stony clay overlay a post-hole (dims 0.2m x 0.1m; D 0.21m) filled with a grey clay and charcoal which produced a C14 date of 1284 +- 30 BP (660-780 Cal. AD). A subrectangular pit (dims 1.2m x 0.8m; max. D 0.49m) just 0.4m to the N contained three clay fills with varying amounts of stone and charcoal inclusions. Four pieces of flint were recovered from this pit and two pieces of chert debitage were recovered from the topsoil. Another subrectangular pit (dims 1.75m x 0.9m; D 0.35m) (26) with two clay fills was c. 20m to the SE and could belong to the same era. There were furrows and other pits in the area that proved to be modern. (Collins and O’Connor 2008, 13-15)
