The National Monuments Service's description
Reported (5-10-2021) by Mr Aidan Harte, Project Co-ordinator, Leitrim Sweathouse Project. In pasture, on the gentle SW facing slope of a low, N-S ridge, c. 75m E of the Eslin River. The landowner recalled that his father (who came here in 1902) did not know what the structure was but thought it was probably a lime-kiln and later filled it in for safety reasons. He also remembers harriers dug it to get a fox out in the late 1950s.
A Schools Manuscripts Collection reference (Volume 0215, Page 244) confirms a sweathouse in the townland but a precise location was not recorded:
‘In the town-land of Cavan there… Near the edge of this mound is a building of the finest type of its size and it is thought to be a sweat house.’
All that is visible is a poorly defined, grass covered hollow (Dims. 2.8m N-S; 2m E-W) with some earthfast stone evident on the downslope side.
