The National Monuments Service's description
Located at the bottom of a W-facing slope and on the line of the N4 road. An area of broken and burnt sandstone (dims 10m E-W; 7m plus N-S; mas. T 0.35m) that had been cut by two E-W covered drains was excavated (94E0097) in advance of roadworks, and a wood-lined trough (dims 1.85m x 1m; D 0.45m) was revealed at its centre. The trough had a layer of silty sand with charcoal at the bottom (max. T 0.45m) overlain by burnt mound material. At the W end of the trough a layer of organic material (T 0.1-0.15m) separated the two layers. The wooden lining was noted around most of its sides. Some animal bone was recovered in the vicinity together with a flint flake. (Opie 1995g)
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
