The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on rock outcrop within the village of Carrigallen. It is depicted as a rectangular N-S structure and described as a church in ruins on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map. This is the site of the medieval parish church of Carrigallen, and it might have continued in use until the present Church of Ireland church was built in 1814 (Lewis 1837, vol. 1, 279) in the same graveyard. The foundations of the E wall (L 7.2m; H 0.8m) are visible under a cairn (dims 15.5m N-S; 5.7m E-W) within the graveyard. Archaeological testing (05E0828) just across the road from the entrance to the graveyard produced no related material (Henry 2008).
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
