The National Monuments Service's description
Situated in deep water c. 100m from the S shore of Turf Island and c. 150m W of the promontory of Wood Island in the sub-oval northern part (max. dims c. 1.4km E-W; c. 900m N-S) of St John's Lough. It is depicted only on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as the site of a crannog and as ‘Crane Island’. This is an overgrown island of earth and stone (dims 21m E-W; 16m N-S; H 1.5m) with no visible surface evidence of artificial construction. A fragment of a grindstone was found on it in 1969 (Lucas 1972, 190). The possible crannog (LE024-011----) is c. 40m to the NW.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
