The National Monuments Service's description
Reported (5-10-2021) by Mr Aidan Harte, Project Co-ordinator, Leitrim Sweathouse Project, but not yet inspected. Depicted as a roughly square (L c. 3m; Wth c. 3m) and apparently roofless structure and named ‘Sweat House (in Ruins)’ on the OS 25-inch map (1907), where it is shown c. 15m S of a NW-flowing stream, with the nearest dwelling shown c. 140m to the ENE. Now at the NE edge of a forestry plantation.
Recorded in the Schools Manuscripts Collection (Volume 0208, p. 247):
‘There was one [sweathouse] … in the townland of Murhaun. Joseph Rourke of Shaskinacurry saw it in use. The last use made was about fifty four years ago he says… It was a round house and the foundation stones are there yet. The entrance hole or door was hardly two feet high … There were three stone seats inside.’
