The National Monuments Service's description
In undulating countryside. Reference to a graveyard here (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1981 227, 228). Uninscribed and inscribed grave markers of 18th and 19th century date visible. All inscribed headstones post date 1700 AD.
According to Carrigan 'The graveyard has been walled in by the Board of Guardians, and is still used for interments by some old Catholic families in the neighbourhood. A few perches to the south are the remains of an ancient gateway (LA035-031003-) which, perhaps, led to the prysbytery attached to the church (LA035-031001-)' (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 228).
Roughly circular shaped graveyard (int. dims. 24m N-S; 37m E-W) enclosed by a stone wall as indicated on current ed OS 6-inch map. Church in centre of graveyard. Uninscribed grave-markers visible in the surrounding subrectangular graveyard. Gateway with rebated entrance (Wth c. 5.1m; D c. 3.3m; T c. 1m) lies to SW of church. Large subcircular enclosure (LA035-031004-) surrounding site is visible on aerial photographs (CUCAP, BDL 18, 27-8). Evidence of possible bank at E and S, no other surface remains survive.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
