The National Monuments Service's description

Reference to a twelve acre field called 'Ballina-ghowl' in which large quantities of human remains were found supposedly a battlefield (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 64).
Unlocated burials within townland described by Carrigan as 'immediately to the north of Granston Manor (LA028-051), is a 12 acre field called Ballina-ghowl, where considerable quantities of human remains have been turned up, especially between two large bushes near the old public road. This was the battle-ground of the Oulthachs, or Ulstermen, and the O'Phelans, in 1156 or 1157' (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 64)
