The National Monuments Service's description

A ruined castle showed on the Down Survey barony map. An early seventeenth century four storey castellated house belonging to the Phelans (Carrigan 1905, 132). In undulating countryside. No visible surface remains. Described by Carrigan as 'The 'Castle' or rather castellated house of Grangemore, is a four-storeyed building of the beginning of the 17th century. The walls are 3 ft. thick; the doors are defended by port holes; the chimney stacks are lozenge-shaped' (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 132)

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
