The National Monuments Service's description

In gently undulating countryside. In 1905 Carrigan recorded that that were 'extensive traces of foundations appear all around the castle'(LA022-003001-) (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 129). Today there are no visible surface remains of any earthworks. It is unclear what Carrigan meant by his use of the term 'foundations'. They may have been traces of buildings associated with the castle or possibly the remains of a settlment associated with Derrin Castle.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
