The National Monuments Service's description
Unlocated ironworks within the seventeenth century town of Mountmellick, an iron works, using local ores and fuels came into existence in 1650, and specialised in making bits and , said to have been the best in ireland. This ironworks closed around 1750 (Dunne, 14).
