Bridge

The National Monuments Service's description

Located c. 400m E of the E perimeter of the medieval Thomastown (KK028-040----), across a river which flows S c. 60m into the River Nore. It is indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map as ‘Monteen or Cody’s Br.’. Carrigan (1905, vol. 4, 258) quotes the notes of Rev. Moore, dated 1851, which mention, ‘at Cody’s bridge, stood a castle [KK028-090----] of the McOdos or Codys, alias Archdeacons’. Also in this area there is a watermill (KK028-089002-) indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of Gowran, County Kilkenny (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). The presence of a medieval castle and a 17th-century watermill in the vicinity suggests that there was a pre-1700 bridge in this area, possibly near or on the location of the present bridge. The present single-arch stone bridge appears to date to the 18th/19th century (Farrelly et al. 1993, 197).
