The National Monuments Service's description
In a band of trees on the W bank of meandering stream called the Craosóg (O'Kelly 1969, 192). The OS Letters (1839) mentions, 'a holy well here called Tubber Maoin or Maon's Well, having a very large ash tree growing near it. It is not now visited for any devotional purposes' (O'Flanagan 1839, vol. 2, 55-6 (19)). Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 321) also refers to, 'the holy well now called "Tullamaine well.", which is, 'shaded by a venerable ash'. He relates that, 'The Irish name of the holy well of Tullamaine is now pronounced Thubbervweenia (Tiobar-Mhaighne), that is, Maighin Well. A pattern was formerly held at the well on January 21st' (ibid. 322).
