The National Monuments Service's description
Formerly erroneous located in Cellarstown West townland. Three 'cabbins' are indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of ‘The Liberties of the Citty of Kilkenny’ in the 17th-century townland of 'Lowsellerstowne' (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). They are located in the S of the townland, close to a distinctive zig-zag W boundary which survives along the W edge of the modern townland of Cellarstown Upper. Though not indicated on the Down Survey parish map of St John's, they are mentioned in the accompanying terrier, 'In Lowcellarstown are many Cabbins and an old Fortification' (ibid.). The proprietors in 1640 are listed as, 'James Lanton Fitz [and] Nichols & Rich[ard] Parcell'. The precise location of these buildings within this townland is unknown.
