The National Monuments Service's description

Indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of Gowran in ‘Higginstowne’ (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin) and on the Down Survey parish map of Blackrath and St Martins within ‘Higginstowne’ (NLI MS720). The terrier accompanying the parish map notes, 'There is at Higginstowne a Castle in repaire' and lists ‘Nicholas Nash’ as the proprietor in 1640 (ibid.). According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 359), 'It is believed to have stood on, or adjoining, the site now occupied by Mr. Maher's residence'. The precise location of the castle within the townland is unknown.
