The National Monuments Service's description
Indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map as 'Maddockstown Well' in Gothic script which suggests that it was considered an antiquity when the map was being drawn up. It would appear to have been a domestic well, described by Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 366) as, 'a good well'. He mentions that there is no holy well in Maddockstown.
