Ogham stone (present location)

Possibly originally from Moone Abbey (KD036-031001-), Co. Kildare. Currently in the OPW store, Kilkenny (Kilkenny depot stone carving number: KD034). Fragment of an ogham stone (Wth 0.252m; T 0.11m), with two smooth stone faces (surviving Wth 0.144m and 0.13m respectively) on either side of a well-defined obtuse angle. Most of the inscription is missing and the portion that remains occupies one end of the stone. Part of the inscription, consisting of 3 strokes, continues across the angle, with the 4 parallel lines below that only running up to the angle.
Likely to have been uncovered during the archaeological excavations at Moone Abbey carried out by Miriam Clyne in 1998 and 1999 under excavation license number 98E0276. The excavations, funded by Dúchas The Heritage Service, were carried out in advance of conservation, from 22 June to 7 August 1998, with a second ten week season in 1999. The site is the early medieval monastery reputedly founded by St Colmcille in the 6th century. The eastern end of the church was confirmed to be early medieval, probably dating to the 10th or 11th centuries.
