The National Monuments Service's description
Worked oak timbers from a horizontal mill, including those from a wooden trough and the floor from a dam, were discovered during construction in 1861 of a reservoir 760m SE of Kilkenny Castle (KK019-026078-) (Robertson 1861, 347-8; Lucas 1953, 6-7). The mill was powered by a spring, known in the 19th century, as 'the Seven Springs'. The trough was subsequently dated by dendrochronology to the 8th century and it can therefore probably be associated with the early medieval ecclesiastical settlement (KK019-026098-) of Domhnach Mór (St Patrick's) 790m to the W.
