The National Monuments Service's description

On the E edge of Dinin river valley, on a slight terrace between very steep slope of hills above and lower valley slope. Fine views all along and across valley, land rising steeply to the SW. A bend of the river to W at Deen junction gives the monument a commanding position. The OS Letters (1839) describe how in this townland, 'Portions of an old castle of no great strength are to be seen' (O'Flanagan ed. 1930, vol. 1, 18 (6)). According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 455) this castle was, '"in reasonable repair" in 1655, but only an inconsiderable portion of it now remains. It is traditionally said to have been built by the O'Brenans. Be this as it may, however, the townland of Clougharinka became the property of the Purcells of Ballyfoyle, previous to 1404, and was held by them down to the 17th century'. The castle is not visible at ground level.
