Graveyard

The National Monuments Service's description

In rolling grassland, on the E side of gently rising land and at the N end of a slight N-S ridge. According to Carrigan (1909, vol. 2, 280) there is ‘a most ancient graveyard here, called the “Churchyard of Ballyphilip.”…There are but four inscribed headstones here, the oldest of which commemorate several persons named Mara, who died between 1743 and 1799’. The graveyard is indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular (diam. c. 29m) area delimited by a dashed line which suggests it was not physically enclosed. By the 2nd (1899) ed. the graveyard had been enclosed by a stone wall, giving it its current polygonal shape (dims. c. 38m N-S and E-W). Within the much overgrown graveyard there are slight traces of the foundations of a church (KK003-002001-) in the interior. There are a number of grave markers and some headstones, the earliest visible date to the 18th century.
