The National Monuments Service's description

B. Ó Ciobháin recorded the placename 'Móta Pheig Ní Shé' [Peig O'Shea's moat] in this townland (SMR file). Joyce (1913, vol. 1, 290) states that 'the large high mounds are often called mota in Irish, the same as the English word moat'. The precise location of this possible mound or moat is not known.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
