The National Monuments Service's description
The exact location of this fish palace is not known. Numerous references exist to fishery and fish palaces established by William Petty in the Kenmare area and specifically at Killowen. According to Wood (1934, 23), Petty 'erected fish "palaces" at Killowen'. Further reference to 'the fishings of Killowen' and to 'the pallice' at Killowen for the year 1675 are cited in Wood (ibid., 38-9). Went (1946, 151) states that 'there are now no traces of fish palaces' at Killowen.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
