Standing stone - pair

This stone pair, not marked on the OS maps, is situated on a slight rise in a sizeable tract of bog on the NE slopes of Knocknagullion, overlooking the valley of the Blackwater river to E. Set 1.33m apart, the stones stand in a NNE-SSW line. The sides of the taller stone at SSW taper to an elongated point. It stands 2.1m high, and measures .47m x .38m at base. There is an ogham inscription on both edges of its ESE face. Macalister (1945, 215), reading up-up, read it as:
CATVVIRR MAQI LUGUVVEC
A flake has spalled off just above the fourth score of the final C, rendering it almost indecipherable. A grooved circle, .16m in diameter, is carved on the ESE face of the stone, 1.6m up from its base. Below it is a downward sloping groove, .2m long.
The second stone, a broad slab, rises to a height of 1.15m and measures 1.14m x .3m at base. Packing stones are visible around the bases of both stones.
