The National Monuments Service's description
This site is marked 'Meelisheen' on the OS Fair Plan and named 'Flat Fort'/Maol Lios (Lisín) in the OSNB (Knockane, 80). Part of a field boundary on the S side of a nearby house followed a semicircular outline (Ó Cíobháin 1978, 155), possibly that of an earlier circular enclosure. This was recently levelled. On its E side is a closed-in souterrain (KE073-019001-), marked 'Cave' on the second edition of the OS map. It is stone-built and consists of three separate chambers (local information).
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 683. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
