Ringfort - rath

This circular bivallate rath is located in pastureland on a ridge of high ground overlooking the Ferta river valley. The outer bank and intervening fosse are only extant in its SW sector, their extremities marked by modern field boundaries. The bank, composed of earth and gravel, is 4.5m wide, 1.6m high externally and falls 1.8m to the bottom of the fosse which is 4m wide. The inner bank is earthen, but features a substantial stone content. It rises 3.15m high externally, is 3m wide and is up to 1m high internally. A possible entrance, 2m wide, occurs at E and is flanked on its S side by an upright slab. Ua Riain noted the remains of several poorly preserved buildings in the interior of the rath (1927), but these are no longer visible.
