The National Monuments Service's description
‘C. Caretrante' which appears on Norden's Map of Ireland 1609-1611 (O'Sullivan Bear, 1903) may refer to a castle situated at the SW side of Ventry Harbour. No trace of any structure survives and the site does not appear on the OS Maps. The Trants were a prominent family in the area in the 16th century and purchased a castle in Dingle in 1565 (McKenna 1979, 14).
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 1001. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
