The National Monuments Service's description

This is the home of Muirs Ó Suilleabháin the Irish author famous for his account of growing up on the Great Blasket island titled 'Fiche Bliain ag Fás' (Twenty years a growing) which was published in Irish and English in 1933. Born on the island in 1904 into an Irish-speaking community his mother died when he was only six months old and Ó Suilleabháin was reared in an institution in Dingle. He returned to the island in 1911 and subsequently joined the Garda Síochána in 1927. Ó Suilleabháin was stationed in the Connemara Gaeltacht, Co. Galway, but resigned from the force in 1934 intending to make his living from writing. He rejoined An Garda Síochána in 1950 and was stationed in Galway where on 25th June, he tragically drowned while swimming near Salthill.
