Children's burial ground

The National Monuments Service's description

In pasture, on a SE-facing slope, towards the top of a rise. A trapezoidal area (28m E-W; 18m N-S), which tapers toward the W, is defined by a linear earthen bank (Wth 2.56m; int. H 0.36m; ext. H 0.63m) on the E side, by a linear scarp (H 1.55m) on the S and W sides and by a linear field boundary (L 34m) on the N side. The interior slopes slightly down to the E and the surface becomes uneven towards the W. The burial ground is covered with overgrowth. It is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as a rectangular area (c. 70m E-W; c. 28m N-S) and on the 1894 OS 6-inch map as a rectangular area (c. 40m E-W; c. 25m N-S). According to local information, unbaptised babies were buried here. This is probably the 'killeen' referred to by Crawford (1912, 235) as being '2 miles S.E. of Castlemain station' and in which was a 'defaced ogham pillar' (KE047-078001-).
