The National Monuments Service's description
Internal diam. 28.5m N-S, 30m E-W
Doonclaur/Dún Cláir: This circular multivallate rath is situated on a very gentle S facing slope at the W end of the Anascaul valley. It is densely overgrown, but the 3 earthen banks and 2 fosses are very well-preserved. The souterrain KE044-114001- which apparently lies in the NE sector of the interior (OSNB Ballynacourty, 17) is not now visible. The outermost bank is 1m high above the external ground level and 2m high above the fosse. It is present only along the S and E sides of the enclosure. The middle bank rises 3m above the outer fosse and 3.25m above the inner fosse. The inner bank rises 3.75m above the fosse and 2m above the interior. The inner faces of the banks are intermittently faced with drystone masonry. A causewayed entrance at E provides access to the interior. The gap through the inner bank is lined with stones.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 415. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
