National Monument No. 65. The Early Christian and Medieval ecclesiastical complex at Kilmalkedar (KE042-026----) lies at the foot of the W slopes of Reenconnell hill, overlooking Smerwick Harbour. The Reenconnell ridge peaks at 907 feet/276m to NE of the site and the area around Kilmalkedar is sheltered on its N and S sides by spurs of this hill.

(15) (KE042-026015-) Only half of this font survives, broken into 2 fragments and lying on the large tomb in the chancel of the church. It is a circular, flat-bottomed vessel with a flat rim, the sides tapering in slightly from top to bottom. The wall of the vessel is c. 0.07m thick, the base c. 0.11m thick, and internally the basin measures 0.62m and 0.47m in diameter at top and bottom respectively and c. 0.15m in depth. The central drain hole measures c. 0.03m in diameter. A small fragment of what may originally have been a circular stone disc lies loose in the chancel. Part of its curved outer edge is preserved and on the upper surface there are 2 small holes, 0.02m in diameter and in depth. This may have been part of a cover for the font or alternatively it may be part of a rotary quernstone.
