Barrow - pond barrow

The National Monuments Service's description

'The site is located in the corner of a large field on the south side of the N22. The field slopes down from the west to the east and north and is marshy in those areas at the base of the slope. The site affords good views to the east and north-east, while the low hill which is crowned by Glanbane hillfort is visible to the south – south-east. The embanked enclosure (KE039-202001-) shows up clearly on aerial photography and is situated in one of the marshy areas of the field. The site consists of a large, denuded bank, which can be traced all round the site. The bank is on average 9.5m wide, 0.57m high internally and 0.47m high externally. The site is partially scarped back into the natural slope of the ground at the north – north-west and this gives an exaggerated internal height (c. 1m ) at this point. There is no evidence for an entrance at any point. There appears to be evidence for an external ditch to the west – north-west but this is more than likely related to the possible barrow rather than the enclosure, as no definite ditch can be discerned elsewhere round the site. The interior is relatively flat at base but, due to the inward slope of the enclosing bank, the site would have a “saucer-like” profile. The interior is damp and has a heavy growth of irises. The internal dimensions of the site are 22.7m N-S and 21.5m E-W. The total dimensions of the site are 42.4m N-S and 40.9m E-W.'
