The National Monuments Service's description
Described by Hitchcock (1854, 241) as following; 'Traces of a causeway from the fort [KE038-003005-] across the slob to the mainland are still plainly discernible'(SMR file). This site is again described in a survey carried out by the Irish Tourism Association in 1944-45 (MS copy Kerry County Library) where the stones are referred to as "a few remaining pillar stones in an ancient burial ground [KE038-003006-]". Interestingly this survey notes the existence of a "causeway" running from the ruined stone fort (Tonakilla Fort KE038-003005-) to the "neck of land adjoining". It also states that locals can remember seeing the causeway "faced with stone for 100 yards and a width of 20 yards" (1944-45, 13). Following field inspection in the area, this causeway remains unlocated. See field inspection report (NF8, 138-9) (SMR file).
