The National Monuments Service's description
(w) Clearance cairns: These 5 heaps of small stones, 3m x 2m x .35 to .5m high on average, are overlain by up to .3m of peat and may be field clearance cairns related to the pre-bog field system. One of the cairns has been heaped against a large boulder, a common practice even today.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 25. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
