Ringfort - rath

A univallate rath situated in generally level pastureland, at the W end of the low ridge that borders Brandon Bay between the mouth of the Owenmore river and that of the Scorid and Glennahoo rivers. The circular interior is enclosed by a single earthen bank and fosse, both of which have been disturbed by the roots of the trees which grow along them. From SW to NNW the inner edge of the bank is revetted with drystone masonry which stands to a height of .9m; this feature is not evident along the remainder of the bank. The fosse can be examined closely only at S where it is 2m deep below the crest of the bank, 1m deep below the surrounding field level and c. 2m wide at base. One or 2 courses of drystone masonry adhere to the outer face of the bank at this point for a length of c. 6m. The NE facing entrance has been interfered with in modern times and the gap is now 6m wide. A large, irregularly-shaped mound of loose stones is centrally positioned in the interior; its origin is not clear.
