Promontory fort - coastal

The National Monuments Service's description

Possible promontory fort described in 2002 as follows; ‘A nearly inaccessible north-facing ridge-backed headland shows faint evidence of having been defended on the landward side by a rock-cut fosse and collapsed and grassed over wall. Much of the headlands interior has eroded down to the bedrock and the interior is featureless, save for a high central spine. What looks like collapsed walls are visible on the promontory but the site is too dangerous to examine in detail. Although a likely site for a fortification, this remains only a possible site, as the surface indications are too slight to ascertain their nature. The area is one of hilly boggy grazing and the site is overlooked by higher ground inland and to the west’ (Casey 2002, 51, no. R).
