Standing stone

The National Monuments Service's description

'This 2.10m tall, irregularly shaped standing stone is situated immediately to the north-west of a bi-vallate ringfort (KE030-029----) in a field which is used for grazing. This field is bounded to the west and south by the River Lee, and the surrounding land contains areas of limestone outcrop. This red sandstone gallaun is aligned NNW/SSE, rectangular at base where it measures 0.50m by 0.35, bulges out slightly about 1.0m above the ground to 0.60m by 0.40m, before tapering to a point. A 10cm wide, 2cm deep band has been worn into the stone c.0.20m from the base, although no pock marks are evident. Two hollows occur on the north face of the stone, 8cm and 4cm wide respectively, and both 2cm deep. These are natural solution hollows. This stone stands on the western limits of a low mound. The survey carried out by the Irish Tourism Association in 1944-45 (MS copy Kerry County Library) describes the fort at Lissooleen (KE030-029----) as two ringed with a north facing entrance. It also note that outside the entrance there is a tall slender "gallaun" 8feet high and that 2 feet above the ground a ring has been worn in the stone.'
